Description

The Boxer from Somewhere Else is a feature documentary film about the life and career of Ken Buchanan, the 1970-71 undisputed world lightweight champion boxer. It is built upon a feature length in-depth interview with Buchanan filmed by myself, in which he goes into great detail talking about his career and his life revealing insights, which have never been revealed publicly before.

This explosive interview comprises the main narrative of the story, and is accompanied by archive footage, images, newspaper articles from the time and other media. In addition to the interview, I also spent one year with Buchanan following him around with a camera and filming fly-on-the-wall documentary style scenes to give additional flavor to the film. These scenes are intercut into the documentary.

I decided to make the film after reading Buchanan’s autobiography and becoming fascinated by such an incredible story as the boxer’s journey through life, his ups and downs. And the many unanswered questions that remain to this day about why certain events happened in the way that they did. The film was sponsored by KPMG who organised a screening at the Traverse theatre in Edinburgh in March 2012 and is currently seeking distribution.
